University–Industry Interaction: A Means for Stimulating Manufacturing Excellence

This paper discusses what an engineering school at a university may do for stimulating the manufacturing excellence in industry. Aalborg University will be used as a case example with its unique use of problem-based learning methods. This approach is also imbedded in a new research initiative, The Center for Industrial Production. Examples of industry involvement in research and development projects will be given. Such university–industry collaboration will not only benefit the development of competencies in large and small industrial enterprises; but it provides a laboratory setting for studying integration and implementation. The engineering problem-solving approach contributes to identify universtiy core competencies and suggests a new research agenda.
